Junior Herbalist Club Half Term Taster – 18th February, Prestbury

Join me on Wednesday 18th February for a 2 hour stand alone taster session of Junior Herbalist Club.

Junior Herbalist Club (JHC) was set up in 2014 to teach children about the healing herbs growing all around. The session has an emphasis on learning through making but covertly covering core subjects.

This class will include making herb gifts to take home. Children will be encouraged to use magnifying glasses to look at the plants, learning about plant ID and we’ll create a plant ID discovery table (heading outside will be weather dependent, if the weather is terrible the herbs will be provided).

We’ll make a herbal infusion to try (everything is optional for those sensitive to new flavours!), create leaf rubbings as well as make a syrup for winter wellbeing and sleep pillows to take home.

Children under 8 will need a parent/guardian to stay with them for the duration of the class, please note the class is suitable for 6 years and above (keen nature loving/foraging 5 year olds will love it too!). Herbal tea will also be provided for grown ups! Please note children will need to wear clothes/shoes that can get messy.

Please bring a clean sterilised jam jar for the remedies the children will be making.

Junior Herbalist Club was originally established in 2014 and is supported by the National Institute of Medical Herbalists. It’s the only nationally recognised herbal medicine course for children. It is delivered by Medical Herbalists who have undergone specific training in order to deliver the course. Due to the popularity Level Two and Three can also be enjoyed once Level One/Two has been completed.

Cath Couzens is an award winning Medical Herbalist, based in Macclesfield and runs a private online health clinic. Cath also runs Herb School for Magical Grown Ups and monthly Junior Herbalist Clubs for children. She was recently named Best Wellbeing Specialist in Cheshire in the Muddy Stilettoes Awards.

The next intake for Junior Herbalist Club is the Level One Easter School from 30th March to 3rd April, 9.30am-12noon each day covering the whole of Level One in a week at Prestbury Village Hall. There will also be a L1 Summer School and L2 Summer School.

Junior Herbalist Club Level One Easter School in Prestbury, Cheshire 30th March – 3rd April 2026

Due to demand I have created a JHC Level One Easter School which will take place from Monday 30th March to Friday 3rd April at Prestbury Village Hall, with two classes each morning from 9.30am-12.00pm.

Ten lessons are delivered over the week and at the end of the week the children are given certificates of attendance and a badge and can ‘graduate’ into Level Two if they’d like to.

The classes are fun and relaxed with the children using magnifying glasses to look at the herb, making ‘lotions and potions’ to take home, trying herbal teas, creams, balms and glycerites to try new flavours and get to know the plants. We aim to get out when we can to identify the plants growing and to harvest herbs too.

Junior Herbalist Club (JHC) was started in 2014 as a local scheme in Lancashire.

All sessions are run by myself, a qualified Medical Herbalist who has undergone specific training in order to be able to deliver this course.

JHC has been planned so that each class the children build on their knowledge and skills. We start off with Lavender, a well-known and easily identifiable plant, and progress on to making sun-teas, infused oils, poultices, cordials, bath-bombs, and lip balms.

At the end of each session the children are given a worksheet to complete so they develop a portfolio of learning.

By the end of Level One, we hope that the children will be able to:

– Correctly identify many of the common medicinal plants growing in their gardens, parks, hedgerows and streets and that they will be able to distinguish between poisonous and non-poisonous plants.

– Know the medicinal properties of many common plants.

– Understand how to use some of these plants in first aid and how to use some plants for making medicines.

– Enjoy listening to the stories and tales of folklore and history surrounding the plants and herbal medicine.

– Know how to cultivate and harvest plants whilst respecting their environment and all of nature.

The cost for the Easter School will be £250 for the whole week, covering 10 classes, payable in advance to secure your child’s place. This covers all tuition, all the herbs, equipment, materials and worksheets to take home. Children will take home their ‘makes’ each day as well.

This special week is limited to 10 children. Three spaces have already been reserved. Email me to receive further details and to register your child.

Herbal Crafty Christmas – making herbal gifts and decorations

Join me for a festive workshop and make some herbal gifts and seasonal treats to take home!

Make new connections, come on your own or with a friend and gather upstairs at The Snowgoose for 7pm on Thursday 4th December. We’ll spend the evening diving into herbs for the festive season and you’ll make your own mini herbal bath salts, pomanders, festive spice blend and herbal decorations to take home, with us wrapping up for 9pm.

There’ll be cosy Yuletide herbal teas for you on arrival, seasonal snacks or you might prefer to buy a drink from the bar and you’ll receive a warm, friendly welcome weaving fun and herbs together.

Autumn Equinox Herb Workshop – Into the Heart of Rose, Saturday 21st September

Join me for a sensory workshop for the Autumn Equinox to learn all about Rose and how I work with this beautiful plant medicine in my dispensary.

During the morning you’ll discover the folklore, magic and historical associations of Rose, as well as experiencing a tea tasting, using all your senses to experience with this heart opening plant.

Rose is historically known to support the physical and emotional heart, traditionally worked with for grief, anxiety and digesting emotions You’ll have the opportunity to sample different preparations of Rose including syrup, glycerite, teas and tinctures. I’ll also show you how to make your own Rose Water and you’ll get hands on and make your own Rose sugar to enjoy at home.

Everyone will also make up a bag of Apothecary Rose petals to take home.

Refreshments will be served during the morning and there’ll be plenty of delicious herbal teas during the session. Why not bring a friend or one of the family – you can also buy gift vouchers if you’d like to buy a present for a loved one.

Bring your notebook or journal to take notes, or an art journal and pens/art materials to record your experience.

New Cheshire herb workshop – Learn how to make the winter tonic ‘Fire Cider’ (non-alcoholic)

Do you want to support your health for the winter months?

Join me this autumn to make Fire Cider and learn about all the powerhouse ingredients.

During the workshop I’ll talk you through the steps and we’ll make the Fire Cider together, you’ll learn about all the herbs we work with the science and the folklore and be given details on what to do next after the workshop.

Herbs will include Thyme, Rosemary, Garlic, Chilli, Ginger, Turmeric, Citrus, Onions and more.

This is a fun, hands on workshop and you’ll leave with lots of new knowledge and your jar of Fire Cider to enjoy over the winter months.

The dates are:

Saturday 5th October – in person at Prestbury Village Hall (10.00am-12.30pm)

Thursday 7th November – online, all the ingredients and equipment you need will be sent out to you (UK only) (7.00pm -8.15pm)

New workshop – Summer Herbal Infusions, Saturday 17th August

Join me to learn all about herbal infusions and how I work with plant medicine in my dispensary.

You’ll blend your own herbal tea to take home after experiencing a whole host of tea tastings using all the senses to taste and feel how the plant works in the body. So often people say to me that they just don’t know what flavours they like and this is a great way to taste lots of different herbal teas!

During the morning you’ll also learn about the folklore, magic and historical methods of working with the selection of seasonal herbs. In addition you’ll learn tips on harvesting, drying and storing herbs for teas and what to look out for when you’re buying or creating your own blends.

Refreshments will be served during the morning and you’ll sample plenty of delicious herbal teas during the session.

Why not bring a friend or one of the family – this event also makes a lovely gift for someone.

Bring your notebook or journal to take notes and art materials if you’d prefer to draw the herb.

You’ll also take home the vintage china cup from your tea tastings too!

Junior Herbalist Club launching in Cheshire

Some exciting news, I’ve recently qualified as a Junior Herbalist Club Leader!

Junior Herbalist Club was started in 2014 as a local scheme in Lancashire and was so popular with children a second-year program was created.

The aim of JHC is to let children learn about the healing and medicinal plants all around them in a safe and supervised environment, whilst covertly incorporating core subjects including English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Botany, Latin and Cookery, as well as helping children to gain confidence, improve fine motor control and develop a new skill set.

Junior Herbalist Club meets once a month, with 10 lessons over a year from September to July, starting on Saturday 28th September, 9am-10.30am at Prestbury Village Hall.

At the end of the year the children are given certificates of attendance and a badge and can then attend 2nd year. JHC is aimed at children aged 7-12 but older children are welcome too.

I’m really excited to be the first Junior Herbalist Club Leader in Cheshire and I’m actively looking for contacts in schools too as it can be run as an after school club. I can also bring taster sessions to summer fetes and fundraising events.
