Althea officinalis or Marshmallow is a beautiful herb and one I immediately think of for inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract.
Marshmallow’s demulcent and emollient properties mean it can help to relieve IBS, sore throats, coughs, bronchitis, cystitis and gastritis.
I grow this lovely plant in the garden and on my allotment and its leaves can also be medicinal as they’re super soft. More on that another day!
I haven’t yet taken a harvest of Marshmallow, but when I do I know the roots will be helping to support patients who will really benefit from its soothing actions.
The flower is a beautiful delicate light pink, this image was taken last summer.
Did you know that Marshmallow sweets originally were made from this plant? The root does have a sweet smell and a gentle sweet flavour too.
I love growing this beautiful plant and plan to grow a lot more this year.
